PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

MindTap digital platform, Cengage Learning ||

I’ve been working with the History and Political Science content teams on product development for the company’s ‘born digital’ MindTap platform, including:

– product storymapping

– generating instructions to project managers on critical platform functionality

– extensive UX research and analysis

– narrative video summaries of chapter content

– upper-level course outcomes and chapter-level learning objectives.

One team is developing a unique approach to online learning that reconciles educators’ attachment to — and fondness for — specific textbooks with access to interactive activities.  I worked directly with the subject matter expert and the primary text to:

– distill chapter-level learning objectives

– create online activities that work across multiple texts.

Project New Media Literacies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology ||

The Project New Media Literacies initiative was devoted to expanding the project’s foundation of ‘participatory culture’ and developing platforms to expand upon this foundation with knowledge gained through practical engagement with interactive platforms. Project Director Dr. Henry Jenkins and I developed the New Media Exemplar Library, a collection of activities suitable for high school and advanced junior high students based on demystifying creative practices such as blogging, comic books and radio production. [Note: links are to earlier, less complete iterations of the library.]

My accomplishments included:

– developing the initial and secondary frameworks for the media library

– curating media library subject matter to ensure a balanced representation of individual vs. collaborative production, digital vs. non-digital production, visual vs non-visual media, etc.

– developing key components of the video content and emphasizing the inclusion of “ethics” and “history” modules in all library entries

– ensuring that library entries were sufficiently rigorous and presented a relatively unbiased approach to subject/subject matter

– testing and evaluating product content with potential users in Chicago and Boston

– working with programmers, videographers, graduate students and technical staff to ensure high-quality outcomes

– connecting with fellow McArthur grantee projects in Chicago, San Francisco, and Cambridge

for an iPad startup game similar to Guitar Herousing a touch keyboard iPad interface.

Accomplishment included:

– Developing proposals for the product’s look and feel, and user UX:

– Evaluating draft app interfaces

– Identifying potential music clip vendors

– Identifying market leaders in the keyboard app space

– Determining product price points via market comps

– Testing market proof of concept

– Representing the project at industry trade shows

for a 300+ page curriculum targeted at junior and high school students that probes questions relating to digital ethics.

– Refining interview protocols

– Collaborating with GoodPlay project colleagues on curriculum ideas, structures and assessments.

– interviewing area youth on their experiences with ethical dilemmas in digital spaces, such as illegal downloading, anonymous bullying, and cheating in online games.

– Reviewing activities for content, pacing, seat time.
